Buttermilk Pie Recipe

If you aren’t from the south or haven't heard of buttermilk pie in general you might be thinking, “umm buttermilk?” The sugar in this recipe will make up for it – trust me! When I sit down and plan our Thanksgiving meal and dessert, this pie always makes the list.

A few years into me and Bradley’s dating years, we went to one another’s Thanksgiving. It didn’t take him long to claim this as his favorite pie! He requests it every year. And if I’m being honest, it doesn’t really smell like the holidays until I make it. It’s a beloved favorite on my side! Whenever the occasion comes up for me to make a dessert for a cookout or get together, often times I go for this – or my mom’s brownies! Sometimes you just need a taste of home.

If you don’t have store bought buttermilk, here’s how you can make it at home with just two ingredients.

You’ll need:

·      1 Tbs white vinegar

·      1 cup 2% milk or whole milk

Directions:

For every 1 cup of milk add 1 Tablespoon white vinegar. Stir vinegar into milk and let it sit while you prepare your pie. It will curdle at the top.

Now, it’s time to prepare your pie!

Ingredients:

·      1 stick unsalted butter, melted

·      2 cups of sugar

·      ¼ cup of flour

·      ¼ tsp salt

·      1 cup buttermilk

·      3 eggs

·      1 tsp vanilla

·      Cinnamon

Directions:

·      Preheat oven to 375 F

·      Mix together dry ingredients except cinnamon

·      Add in wet to dry and mix well with electric hand mixer or whisk

·      Pour mixture into prepared pie crust  (recipe here)

If you're wondering what the white dots are, it's solidified Crisco. This happens when you leave it in the fridge. This does not effect the taste or baking in anyway.

·      Sprinkle cinnamon on top of mixture.

·      Use spoon to swirl cinnamon around evenly.

·      Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour

*** I cooked mine right at an hour and thought it looked a little over baked. Most times when I take it out of the oven, liquid will have formed in the middle. It settles as the pie cools.

Enjoy your pie!

P.S. Try a piece straight out of the fridge.

It’s one of my favorites too! It came from an old family recipe book.

I didn’t realize that’s where it came from. I love that.
